What is a single-line kitchen?

A single-line kitchen is exactly as its name suggests - a kitchen that is set out all in one line. Generally, a fridge is located at one end, with bench space, storage space and an oven/cooktop located in various arrangements along the single line.

An island bench is a great (and quite common) addition, if space allows, to a single-line kitchen too.

What advantages do single-line kitchens offer?

  • Perfectly suited to small spaces.
  • Cabinets can be extended to the ceiling if more storage is needed.
  • All aspects of the kitchen are only one step away.
  • Can be extended out or compacted down to fit almost any space.
  • Seamless integration into other areas of the house.
  • The kitchen can be screened off from the main areas if required.
  • A small dining setting can be added if desired.
  • An island bench can be added for extra bench and storage space.
  • Generally a lower price point.
  • Great for open-plan areas or narrow spaces.

What disadvantages do single-line kitchens offer?

  • There isn't a work triangle.
  • Bench space is quite minimal, especially if an island isn't included.
  • No breakfast bar included.
  • Difficult for multiple cooks to use the kitchen at once.
  • If not designed correctly, storage space can be very limited.

Aspects to consider when looking at single-line kitchens

There is a range of points to consider when looking at whether an L-shaped kitchen is the best option for your needs:

  • What is your budget?
  • How big is your kitchen going to be? How much space do you have to work within?
  • What fixtures and fittings do you currently have and where are they located?
  • Are you wanting to relocate plumbing, gas and/or electrical points? Does your budget include adding additional points?
  • What are you wanting to use your kitchen for? Just for cooking, or for entertaining as well?
  • How many people will use the space? Will they all be using your kitchen at the same time?

Who would benefit from a single-line kitchen?

  • Those in small space situations such as apartments or units.
  • Anyone who wants to screen off their kitchen from their main area.
  • Anyone who would like to include a small dining setting or table in their kitchen.
  • Those with open plan areas.
